It is the mission of Clinical P.E.T. to provide the finest positron emission tomography (P.E.T.) services in an expeditious manner for the benefit of medical professionals and their patients while treating patients with the highest level of respect for their comfort and medical condition.
Positron Emission Tomography (P.E.T.) is a powerful diagnostic tool that, in many cases, renders answers that no other imaging test can provide. This noninvasive procedure helps physicians in their diagnosis and treatment of certain diseases by detecting biochemical changes within the body. This is accomplished by injecting FDG, a compound that contains radioactive molecules, bound to a sugar-like substance, into the body. These molecules provide the tracers that allow the measurement of metabolic activity which is recorded by a computer and converted into pictures for diagnostic purposes.
The most common applications of P.E.T. are in the fields of Oncology, Neurology, and Cardiology. In regard to oncology (cancer), perhaps its most important application, P.E.T. provides vital diagnostic information that can alter the course of cancer treatment and sometimes help in avoiding unwarranted surgery. P.E.T. provides critical information about whether a tumor is malignant or not; the extent of cancer; whether it has spread to other organs; monitoring of cancer recurrences; and monitoring the effectiveness of therapies.
